Battle of Systerback, 9/19 July 1703

I have limited info about the battle of Systerback & will be pleased for any add-ons.

In the beginning of July 1703 Kronhiort moved with a part of his army to Nien. His forces are estimated from 4,000 to 6,800 with 13 cannons. I assume, that he had the following weak troops:
- cavalry: Estlandska Rytters under Tiesenhausen, Nyland-Tavastahus fordubling Rytters, Abo Rytters, Abo tremmanings Rytters, Vyborg fordubling Rytters, Velling Dragonns & Finska Standsdragonskvadron
- infantry: Velling varvade, fordubling battalions of Abo, Tavastahus, Nyland, Vyborg & Savolax.
On 12 of July Swedish vanguard defeated Russian advanced guard from de Moulin Dragoons at Lahti & approached Neva river. It made a danger for the building of Peter & Pavel fortress (later S-Peterburg). Russian troops were immediately reinforced with 3 Dragoons (Renn, Bauer, Kropotov) from main army staying at Yam. On 18 July Peter I marched against Kronhiort with a Corps about 9,000 men:
cavalry under colonel Karl Renn (strength on 3 July 1703)
- K. Renn Dragoons (803)
- R. Bauer Dragoons (1007)
- S. Kropotov Dragoons (921)
- de Moulin Dragoons (ab. 900)
infantry under general-major I. Chambers (estimated strength):
- Preobrazenskiy Guards (ab. 2,800)
- Semenovskiy Guards (ab. 2,000)
My description of the battle is based on the official Russian relation signed by Peter I. Russians approached to Syster river from S-E (see the map). Russian vanguard of Renn Dragoons defeated Swedish advancing guard under major Leyon (from Nyland Infantry) & took the bridge. Swedish stayed in the battle order on the other side of the river. I assume, it was on the field to N-W from the hill marked letter "C". Swedes opened artillery fire from 13 cannons, but Russian dragoons crossed the river & marched through a defile to the field. Then Swedes retreated to a hill (?) & took positions there. Meanwhile four Russian Dragoons formed a line & attacked Swedish front. Evidently Swedes repulsed several mounted Russian attacks, but when they saw Russian infantry on a battlefield (it numbered ab. 5,000), then Kronhiort decided to retreat. Tiesenhausen Rytters covered the retreat & heavily suffered (losses about 170 killed & wounded incl. lieutenant-colonel Glasenapp & major Lion). Swedish losses according to Rosen's Bidrag... were 207 killed & 197 wounded:
But Narva's commandant H. Horn wrote on 16 July 1703 that Cronhiort lost 502 died (incl 4 officers) & 237 wounded (incl. 25 officers). Source: Koskinen Y. Handlingar till upplysande af Finlands öden under det Stora nordiska kriget. 1865. S. 91.
Russian losses according to the official Russian relation were 32 killed & 115 wounded. Swedish losses Russians estimated of about 1,000

  1. Major Leyon belonged to the infantry. He was the same Leyon who had been sent sent to Nöteborg in 1702.

As for the strength of the Russian army Cronhjort in his report claimed that "it cannot be doubted the enemy strength at the very least was above 50,000 men as he had 40,000 at Nyen and for three days had been collecting forces from every corner of Ingria." So in his view the retreat was both necessary and skillfully conducted. Of course at that point he had already been sacked, but his successor did not arrive for another month.

    1. Do you know the following source: Koskinen, Handlingar till upplysande af Finlands öden under det Stora nordiska kriget
      It's avalable on-line here:

The Cronhiort's relation about Systerback is on page 85

    3. Losses are in H. Horn's letter. It's the next document. As far as I understand, Cronhiort forces created 2 lines near village Joutselcke (marked C on the map?). Russians formed 8 lines. Each dragoon regiment was of 2 battalions/squadrons? Also Cronhiort wrote, that his cavalry repulsed repating Russian attacks for 4 (!) hours.
An other interesting moment: Cronhiort wrote that he was opposed by mounted Tzar's guard on white horses with white standards

    4. Well, they are but not as detailed as in the attachment to Cronhjort's letter as it for example gives the names of every killed and wounded officer.

  3. There are a few other bits of information in the correspondence of County Governor Lindehielm:

On the 10th he wrote that he had previously sent the engineer Stobaeus to the army as an expert on fortifications. Stobaeus had returned late on the 9th with the report that the enemy at 6 in the morning attacked Swedish units who were collecting fodder at Walkisaari. The enemy had pursued to Systerbäck, where a fight started. It had continued until 2 p.m. when the enemy attacked (particularly through the forests) with a large force. As there was no place to put the army in a regular battle line Cronhjort had decided to fall back.

    1. if I am not mistaken, old Walkisaari is a modern Beloostrov on Syster river. I believe, it's marked "g" on the map from Krigsarkivet

  4. 502 dead and 237 wounded sounds extremely strange. I wonder if the dead and wounded horses possibly got mixed up in this as they are included in some of the accounts.

  5. 32 killed on one side and 502 on the other. That's 1:15.7, which would be similar to Fraustadt and much worse than Poltava. I doubt that's possible as Cronhjort's army by all accounts retreated in an orderly fashion.

    1. I agree with you that the proportion of losses looks strange. And we both know how accurate were Swedes & Russians in their official relations :).
