Action at Swech, 4 April 1734 (episode of the War of Polish Succession)

By the mid of March of 1734 wojewoda lubelski Jan Tarlo & kazstelan chrski Raczynski gathered Stanislaw’s supporters at Swech. Their strength was about 2.500-3.000 men, incl. 34 choragwies of the national cavalry (from Grand Poland under Sokolinski), 300 dragoons under Melsincki, 250 new-raised cavalry, 80 infantry & 4 cannons. Russian sources mentioned GMs Jan Kampenhausen (pulkownik-kommendant of Grand Hetman Foot) & Schteinlicht (? = Florian Schilling, pulkownik-kommendant of Artillery regiment). They cut-off communications between Russian siege army at Danzig & magazines in the central Poland. Russian GFM Munich sent against Tarlo & Raczynski a Corps of 2.000 Dragoon & 1.000 Cossacks under GL A. Zagriazski.
On 4 of April Zagriazski’s vanguard under colonel Natalis-Corpe (Tver Dragoons) defeated Polish advanced guard of 3 choragwies of Lithuanian Tartars. Next day Russians approached Swech. Poles destroyed a bridge over river Brede (?) & took position on the other bank. Russians repeated the bridge under cover of regimental cannons & crossed the river. After a short clash Poles retreated. Their losses were about 200 killed & 35 captured. Also they lost 2 colours, 3 kettle-drums, 1 cannon & 9 sets of arms (evidently hussar’s ammunition).
Below is a relation by GL A. Zagriazski about this action (in Russian)

Created in 1717 from existed J. Lubelski Dragoons (general-major, podstoli koronny, kasztelan Sandomierski). Regiment got 6th seniority among dragoons.
Gembargewski in his Rodowody pulkow polskich… mentions that in 1726-1768 the chief was Wielopolski Hieronim (general-major, koniuszy w. koronny (1726), gen. lejtn. (1761). But in 1732 the chief was general-major Petr Wodzicki, stolnik krakowski. Colonel was baron Sandretski. Evidently Wielopolski got the regiment after Wodzicki but the date is unclear (in 1735?). Since 2.III.1768 Raczyński Kazimierz, pisarz w. koronny, 28.V.1771 - Raczyński Filip, płk. star. mieścicki, gen. mjr.

Polish Succession War 1733-35: French attack on Russian positions at Danzig on May 27, 1734.

The other my favorite topic is the Polish Succession War 1733-35

During the Polish Succession war 1733-35 Russian army besieged Danzig with Polish garrison under Polish king Stanislaw I (Poniatowski). French king Louis XV sent reinforcements to his father-in-law. French squadron with 3 infantry regiments arrived to Danzig on May, 24. By that moment Russian siege army numbered only about 4,000 active, 3,000 on the left bank of Vistula opposing the city, & about 1,000 in redoubts on the right bank. Fortunately for Russians French spent 2 days for encamping. On the May 25th Russians received re-enforcements & strengthened the detachment on the right bank of Vistula. In the morning May, 27 French under brigadier de la Mothe (2,400) attacked Russian positions defended by 1,600 foot & 2,900 dragoons. French were beaten-off with loss of 97 killed & 136 wounded. Russian losses were 8 killed & 15 wounded. A month later French capitulated in their camp on June, 24. It was the first direct engagement between Russians & French.

F.d. Munnich.
