Colors of the Main Tzar’s army Polks in the 1654 campaign
![]() |
| # 1. Colour of Storozevoy Polk in 1654 campaign
Main Tzar’s army in campaign of 1654 consisted of 6 Polk (Corps), for 3 of them are available its colours (Polks in English part are given in the marching order, in Russian part – in seniority order):
- Ertaulniy Polk (recognizing troops), Petr Sheremetev; the smallest Polk; it consisted of several cavalry troops; no individual colour
- Storozevoy Polk (advanced guard), kniaz Mikhail Temkin-Rostovskiy, see # 1
- Peredovoy Polk (vanguard), kniaz Nikita Odoevskiy. There are no descriptions or drawings of its colours in Russian sources.
- Bolshoy Polk (main army), kniaz Yakov Cherkasskiy, see # 2
![]() |
| # 2. Colour of Bolshoy Polk in 1654 campaign
- Gosudarev Polk (Tzar’s own guard); the Polk/Corps doesn’t have individual colour. See here Gosudarev Polk organisation in 1654 campaign
- Bolshoy Naryad (siege artillery), Dolmatov-Karpov, see # 3
Their BOs I will place later. By the day I have info about “new model” troops, but don’t know exact number of feudal levy troops by Polks (except Gosudarev Polk)
![]() |
| # 3/ Colour of Bolshoy Naryad in 1654 campaign

GNW campaign 1706, part IX: actions in December 1705
After a long break I am continuing the story about winter campaign 1705-06 in Poland. Now is a part about the final preparations to the Swedish match to Grodno (Hrodno).
![]() |
| Actions in Poland in December 1705 (click to enlarge) |
I – Beginning of December. Smigelski with a Corps about 700 men came to Sandomir & destroyed at Kelec 2 choragwies of Potocki. He tried also to capture the castle in Kelec but it’s commandant Grudzinski repulsed the attack.
II - Beginning of December. Lithuanian Grand Hetman Wisniowecki moved his choragwies from Bug to Podlasie on winter quarters
9 Dec. – August sent an order to Saxon army in Lusatia to be ready for a march with food for 14-days. In a case if Carl XII would move to Hrodno, Saxon army had to march in central Pland.
III – 11 Dec. Smigelski with his Corps took Cracow. He captured about 300 Stanislaw’s recruits (cadres of the Horse Guard) & 96 Swedish officers sent to train new Polish troops. On approach to Cracow Smigelsi destroyed Theodor Lubomirski’s (starosta Spiski) choragwie, took it’s banner & taxes from salt mines. Theodor Lubomirski’s banner was decorated with broken Saxon swords & Polish Eagle above them & motto «Conffregisti Domine gladios inimicorum et exaltati caput meum».
IV – A detachment of Henskin’s dragoons attacked Plock with 200 Swedes. Russians captured 1 ensign & 70 privates & killed the rest. In the previous post about actions in November 1705 I mistook old & modern calendar. According to the modern calendar Henskin took Plotck on Dec 11th.
19 Dec. – Russian GL Patkul was arrested by Saxons & imprisoned in the Zonnenstein castle. Command over Russian Auxiliary Corps was given to Saxon GM Hans Hermann Wostromirsky von Rockittnigk (probably he got GL rank)
22 Dec. – Allies in Hrodno got news that Swedes were preparing for a campaign. Russians & Saxons started preparation to repulse Swedes.
V – 22 Dec. Stromberg with 4 IR arrived to Warsawa from Cracow. The main Swedish army is concentrated around Warsawa & ready for a campaign.
VI – 24 Dec. A Corps of 2,000 Swedish cavalry under Mardenfelt crossed Wistula. Evidently he moved to Bug to investigate allied positions & clean right bank of Wistula from allied reconnaissance parties. Allies in Hrodno got news about it on Dec 25th.
VII – 26 Dec. Russian governor of Dorpat reported that Swedes blocked the town from the south (4 infantry battalions) & north (Karelska Rytter & probably other mounted troops). Russian reitars had a lot of small clashes with them.
Dec. 27 – Menshikov left Hrodno to Pultusk (Renne’s dragoon Corps HQ) to investigate real Swedish intentions
VIII – end of December – Stromberg sent several Lubomirski’s choragwies to Royal Prussia against Hometowski.
IX – end of December. 6,000 of Cossacks under Polubotok & 1,000 of Saxon reitars under GL Brause command concentrated at Sandomir.
Now all is ready for the main campaign! -)

Colors of Azov Cossacks of 1737 & 1747
![]() |
| # 1, Colour of Azov Cossacks, 1737
Azov Cossacks were created from Don Cossacks on 9 January 1737. RGVIA has a drawing of their colour dated 1737 (# 1). It was a common practice till 1740s that irregular troops received old colors of regular units. Evidently Azov Cossacks got one of the company colours of 1712 pattern of Tobolsk Infantry (# 2; see my previous post about 1712 pattern)
Probably the color was with Azov Cossacks till 1747 when they received a personal set of colours. Regimental colour was white with Empress initials & red flames in the corners (# 3 & 4). Company colours were smaller, of yellow color & without flames.

| # 2 Company color of Tobolsk Infantry (colour of 1712 pattern)

| # 3, Regimental color of Azov Cossacks, 1747

Russian colors of 1712 pattern. Standards proposed to be made for 15 dragoon regiments in Ukraine in summer 1712.

Many known about Russian colours of 1712 pattern: regimental colours are white with Peter I initials & palm branches, company colours are colored with regimental/provincial arms in the upper left corner. First the “1712 pattern” colour’s descriptions & their drawings were published in the 2nd volume of Viskovatov’s work without any reference to any decree/document or the date when the pattern was issued/introduced. Viskovatov only mentioned that he used an album from one of the Moscow archives. By our days it’s evidently lost. It doesn’t mean that drawings of the “1712 pattern” colours are a fiction. It means that in fact we don’t know exactly when & how they were introduced. Their reality is not beyond any doubt: colours of the “1712 pattern” are available in many museums.
In some works the Decree of 14 March 1712 is mentioned as a decree introduced the “1712 pattern”. But in reality the decree is about obligatory production of all colours in Kremlin Armory, not about issue of any pattern.

Attempts to clarify what colours were in reality produced in 1712 brought me to interesting results. In summer 1712 ober-kriegs-commissar Luka Chirikov investigated Renne’s cavalry in Ukraine (3 Horse Grenadiers & 15 Dragoon regiments) & made a report about their conditions & actions to be done to put them in a good order. He mentioned that colours in dragoon regiments are in a very bad condition: only staffs were available. He proposed on 28 August 1712 to make colours for 15 dragoon regiments (horse grenadiers didn’t have colours that time) of the following pattern: one colour [regimental] with provincial arms, the rest 9 – colored (any color except black) with St. Andrew Cross. We don’t was it implemented or not. We have data about colors (available info is only about colors, no any other details) of colours made in 1712 for 4 Renne’s dragoon regiments. In all cases the color is the same as for “1712 pattern”.
So, the situation with the “1712 pattern” is the following:
1. We don’t know when & how it was issued/introduced
2. Russian museums have colours of “1712 pattern” but we don’t know exactly when they were produced
3. Chirikov on 28 August 1712 proposed a new pattern for 15 dragoon regiments, but we don’t know was it realized or not.
4. Available info about production of the colours in 1712 doesn’t clarify what pattern they were.

Staff of Saxon dragoon regiments in 1701
Now about Dragoons. There are no Etat’s for them in D. Schorr’s Notes on the Saxon army 1700-16 or Schuster & Francke’s work. So, it’s exclusive info about Saxon dragoons structure & organization at the beginning of the Great Northern war. The doc is dated 7 July 1701. It doesn’t mean that the Etat was issued that day; it means that it was in force by that day.
