Russian Auxiliary Corps on Polish-Saxon service 1704-06: list of regimental officers, end of Dec. 1705

Papers of GL Patkul, commander of the Russian Auxiliary Corps on Polish-Saxon service in 1704-06, include lists of regimental officers. They are not dated, but the last promotion is dated 15 Dec, 1705, so I attribute them as the end of Dec 1705. They include all officers from colonels (obrist) to ensign (fahnrich) ranks. Here in the blog I put only officers from captain’s rank & higher. Original text is in German, so many transcriptions of the Russian names are not accurate. All officers are divided into “foreigners” (mark “F”) & “Moskowitisch” (mark “M”). The last ones include officers (both foreign & of Russian origin) available on Russian service by August 1704, when the Corps entered Polish-Saxon service. “Foreigners” joined Russian regiments when the Corps was already in Poland. “Foreigners” had salaries about twice more then “Moskowitisch”. For each officer is available a date when he achieved the current rank (or entered Russian service – for foreigners). By the Dec. 1705 the Corps consisted of 7 regiments & a battalion of Streltzy (4 coys). 6 regiments were of a single battalion of 8 coys. Patkul Foot  consisted of 3 batts, including a Grenadier one (formed in Sept 1705 from detached grenadier coys of 8 regiments; the 8-th regiment, Lewinston, became 2^nd battalion of Patkul in Oct 1705 after Lewinston’s retirement)

Jakob Kettler, Duke of Courland, Foot 1653

Konstantin Gorski mentioned a Polish Foot under Jakob of Courland in 1653 in the camp near Zwanec. It consisted of 8 coys & numbered about 600 men (531 privates). I don't find any mention of it in Wimmer's works. In 1654 evidently it disappeared from the Roll of Crown army.

Hubert Reitar regiment, 1632-34 (first Russian Reitar regiment raised during Smolensk was 1632-34)

I decided to write about the only Russian Reitar troop in that war - Hubert Reitars

First Russian Reitar regiment was created on 10 June 1632. It was formed from existed mounted companies of “foreigners” (in fact = reitars) & enlisted volunteers from Russian gentry. Regiment was commanded by a colonel Charles Samuel Hubert de Ettele (I am not sure in the last name). Hubert was a Frenchman, before Russian service he was lieutenant-colonel of reitars in Imperial army. At the creation the regiment consisted of 12 coys, 177 men each: Rotmistr (colonel, lieutenant-colonel & major in 3 senior coys), Poruchik (lieutenant), Praporshik (ensign), Kvartirmeister (quartermaster), 3 Brigadir (brigadier), 2 Podpraporshik (junior ensign), 167 Reitars, Trubach (trumpeter). In September-1632 a dragoon coy was added, & by summer-1633 the number of coys increased to 14 & totaled about 2,400 men.

Hubert Reitars were equipped & armed in western-style: helmet, double-plated cuirass, carbine, a pair of pistols, sabre or sword. All was manufactured & purchased in Europe. Dress & horses were reitar’s own. In Dec 1632 regiment got one white standard with gold fringe & tassels, 30 azure standards with azure silk fringe & a green standard with green fringe for the dragoon coy. In March 1633 regiment received one more white standard.

The regiment was completed by mid of July 1633 & left Moscow in the end of the month. It joined the siege army at Smolensk on 17 August 1633. Regiment was disbanded soon after the capitulation in June 1634.

Hondius in his “Explicatio…” (explanation) to the engraving wrote about Hubert’s regiment the following: “53. Encampment of Charles Hubert, a Frenchman from d’Ettele family. He had under his command Germans, French & about 600 [sic! By June 1633 it includes at least (!) 1,400 Russians] trained in German style Moskovites, totaled more than 2,000. Also he had a company of German harquebusiers. His encampment was pretty good”.

 Первый русский рейтарский полк появился в 1632 г. Его основу составили имевшиеся роты «немцев», вооруженные и несшие службу по рейтарскому образцу. Указом от 10 июня 1632 Царь повелел «старого и новаго выезду немец строить в конную службу по-рейтарски, как в немецких государствах ведетца, а к немцам в прибавку писати руских охочих всяких служилых людей». Статья А. Беспалова о русском вспомогательном корпусе 1704-06 – МИСТИФИКАЦИЯ?

До сих пор судьба русского вспомогательного корпуса на саксонской службе в 1704-1706 была описана лишь двумя авторами, Николаем Устряловым и Александром Беспаловым. Причем статья Беспалова была опубликована дважды, в 2003 году в журнале «Рейтар» (статья называлась «Запроданный корпус», Рейтар 3/2003,с 41-54) и в 2005 в сборнике «Северная Европа: Проблемы истории» (М., 2005. Вып. 5. С.234-248. Статья называлась «Русский вспомогательный корпус на службе Саксонии в эпоху Великой Северной войны»). Обе статьи абсолютно идентичны. При чтении складывается самые положительные впечатления: много новых фактических данных о составе и численности, ссылки на архивы, и т.д. и т.п. Все здорово, пока случайно не появляется желание узнать побольше, благо большой источниковый аппарат в конце статьи подразумевает наличие большого количества дополнительных материалов по теме.

Вот тут-то и начинается самое интересное… Массив документов по вспомогательному корпусу Паткуля в РГАДА насчитывает более 40 дел (это то, что выявлено мною к настоящему моменту….), но на этот фонд у Беспалова нет ни одной ссылки. Когда читаешь документы Паткуля и смотришь на статью Беспалова - возникает ощущение параллельных вселенных. У Паткуля приведены корпусные и полковые табели, списки офицеров, документы о выплате жалованья и многие другие документы, из которых следует, что до августа 1704 корпус состоял из 11 полков, с августа 1704 – 8 полков и батальон (всего 17), с сентября 1705 – 10 батальонов.

The table below presents the strength & composition of the Russian Auxiliary Corps under GL Patkul on Polish-Saxon service. It's dated 9 Feb 1705. There are 8 regiments (Patkul; Arnstedt, previously Goertz; Gulits; Bilts; Belling; Holstein; Schopping; Levingston) & Rumor's battalion (Streltzy) in it. Regiments consisted of 9 coys (incl. 1 grenadier) each, Rumor's Streltzy - 4 coys (no grenadiers). This establishment (8 reg-s & the batt.) was made in Sept 1704. Data provided by A. Bespalov in his article & further works is wrong. The current establishment was changed in Sept 1705.

Table of 8 Saxon Foot regiments (no exact date, 2H1704-1H1705)

In Russian archives I found several tables of the various Saxon Corps. One of them contains 8 foot regiments without exact date. I attribute it as end of 1704 – first half of the 1705. Regiments had pre-1705 Etat of 1,431 men. Some of them like Schulemberg were disbanded in 1705.
