De la Gardie Estlandskt infanteriregemente (Revalska garnisonsregementet), 1700-1708

De la Gardie regiment was raised through enlistment as a garrison regiment in Reval (Revalska garnisonsregementet also De la Gardie Estlandskt infanteriregemente). Royal patent was issued on 10 March 1700. Regimental chief was Estland governor Axel Julius De la Gardie, colonel – Adam Carl De la Gardie. The regiment was created on the basis of kapten (captain) Klaus Jurgen Freiburg’s company of Narva regiment (Garnisonsregementet i Narva) which stayed in the garrison of Reval by the beginning of 1700. It's commander Freiburg was a real creator of the new regiment. He entered Swedish service in 1666 as a volunteer of the Tavastahus läns inf. reg. In 1668 he was promoted to Förare in the same regiment, in 1674 became a Sergeant in Ture Oxenstjernas regt. In 1675 he was promoted to a Lieutenant again in Tavastahus läns inf. reg., then in 1677 – Captain-Lieutenant (confirmed 1678), in 1678 – Captain (confirmed 1680). In 1684 he transferred in the same rank to the Garnisonsregiment i Narva. For his efforts in the creation of the new regiment he was promoted to a Lieutenant-Colonel rank in the summer of 1700, skipping the Major rank. In 1700-1708 he served in De la Gardie regiment & died at Lesnaya in 1708.

By October of 1700 the regiment consisted of 8 coys in Reval: Lifkompaniet (kapiten-lieutenant v. Klaus Dannenfeld), ov.lojt. Klaus Jurgen Freyburg, major Jurgen von Stahlen, kaptens Johan Jurgen Gyllenbock, Otto Magnus Wolffelt, Berendt Jorgen v. Tiesenhausen, David Filip v. Hertzog, Konrad Herman v. Muhlen. It’s actual strength is unknown. The Lifkompaniet (Leib-company) under kapiten-lieutenant v. Klaus Dannenfeld (captain in 1703, confirmed in the rank on 6 March 1705) evidently composed of grenadiers, see more about it here (link). In autumn of 1701 a battalion (4 coys) of De la Gardie regiment was detached to the Schlipenbach’s Army of Livland. In December of 1701 it stationed far from Erestfer & happily avoided a defeat. Next year (1702) one battalion under A.C. De la Gardie was with Shlipenbach’s army, the second under Freiburg – with Cronhiort.

Siege of Ath, 1-9 October 1745

Allied garrison at Ath was blocked on 26 September, but operations started on 1 October when main French troops under Clermont arrived. It composed of the following infantry regiments: de Picardie, d'Auvergne, Montboissier,Touraine, Rohan, Laval, la Fère, Haynaut, Nivernois, Beltens, Soissonnais, Dauphiné, Lowendal & a battalion of Artillery. Allied commander was Austrian Generalfeldwachtmeister Heinrich Graf v. Wurmbrand-Stuppach, second-in-command was British Brigadier Lord Sempill. The garrison composed of a British battalion of Sempill (25th) regiment & a Dutch battalion of de Guy (10 coy) regiment, totaled ab. 1,200. It capitulated on the 9th of October on the terms of free passage to Brussel & left the town on the 11th (see details in the journal of the siege below).

Долгое время единственным специальным исследованием, посвященным офицерскому корпусу русской армии во вт. пол. XVII – нач. XVIII в., оставался краткий исторический обзор А.З. Мышлаевского¹, однако в последние годы появился ряд специализированных материалов по этой теме, позволивших расширить и дополнить имеющиеся данные². В рамках настоящей работы нами предпринята попытка проанализировать количественный и качественный состав офицерского корпуса русской армии накануне начала Великой Северной войны, и мерах, предпринятых правительством для укомплектования армии офицерскими кадрами в первые годы войны. 

К концу XVII в. полки «нового строя» русской армии включали солдатские и рейтарские полки, драгунские полки не упоминаются, начиная с росписи 1680 г. Согласно неокончательным данным, русская армия насчитывала в 1699 г. не менее 28 рейтарских и 57 солдатских полков³. (см подробнее ссылка) Большинство полков имели 10-ротную организацию (исключение составляли несколько т.н. «генеральских» полков) и насчитывали по 33 офицера, включая 30 строевых: полковник, подполковник, майор, 7 капитанов (ротмистров в рейтарах), капитан-поручик, 9 поручиков, 10 прапорщиков. К нестроевым офицерам относились полковые квартирмейстер, обозный и адъютант. Таким образом, для полного комплекта в 85 полков требовалось не менее 2 800 офицеров.

Battle of Olkeniki, 23 Feb 1706

Now is a story about one more forgotten battle of GNW: battle at Olkeniki (now Valkininkai in Lithuania, ab. 55 km SW from Wilno) where Lithuanians with Russians fought against Lithuanians with Swedes in 1706. It's the same area where Sapieha's supporters lost a battle to "Federalists" under M. Wisniowecki on 18 Nov. 1700. Actually the 1700-1709s were the times of a civil war in Lithuania.

When Karl XII (see more about his troops, link) blocked main Russian army in Hrodno (see more about O'Gilvy's troops, link), a large body of Russian & Lithuanian troops stayed in Samogitia & Curland. Lithuania Grand Hetmen M. Wisniowecki had 35 choragwie which stayed in Samogitia. Lithuania Field Hetman Oginski with 15 choragwies was at Kowno. Curland was occupied by 7 Russian dragoon regiments & 10 batts of infantry under General-Lieutenant von Rosen.

In the mid of February of 1706 Allies got news that a strong detachment of pro-Swedish Polish troops under Potocki & Lithuanians under Sapieha marched to Wilno. Allies decided to attack these auxiliary troops until they were supported by Swedish troops. Their combined forces were around 5-6,000: 35 Lithuanian choragwies under Wisniowecki, 15 Lithuanian choragwies under Oginski, 100 Poles & 200 dragoons under General Sinitski, converged detachment of 2,000 Russian dragoons (from Bauer, Mesherski, du Mont, Inflant regiments) under General-Major Bauer.

Strength & composition of the Swedish garrison at the start of the Russian siege in August of 1656 is still a topic for discussion. F. Carlson mentioned that it was of 1,800 of foot, 2,000 of cavalry and about 500 burgers. Laidre wrote that according to the Swedish archive papers it was of 3,335 of foot in August of 1656 (see details in English link1 & link2; the full text in Russian link), the strength of cavalry is unknown. Fagerlund mentioned that the garrison was 58 coys of foot at the end of the siege, incl. 20 coys of reinforcements arrived in September. So, at the start of siege the garrison was 38 coys.

It seems to me that the difference comes from the subject of “Riga garrison”. Laidre counted together the garrisons of Riga itself (Stadt), its castle (Slotten) & Dynamunde (Nymynde). While Carlson mentioned only Stadt’s garrison. Let’s look at the composition of the “Riga+” garrison at the end of 1655 (from "Uppgifter rorande Svenska Krigsmagtens..."):

- Stadt: 2,198 in 16 coys

- Castle (Slotten): 300 in 2 coys

- Nymunde: 832 in 7 coys

- Rochenh (one of the suburbs?): 289 in 3 coys

They totaled about 3,600 in 28 coys.

Basing on comparing of the various lists of Swedish troops in Riga in 1655-56, I assume that Riga garrison’s infantry in August of 1656 was the following:

Я решил присоединиться к флеш-мобу, организованному Алексеем Лобиным aka alexuslob (ссылка), и опубликовать свой рассказ, о том, как и почему я пришел в изучение российской истории.

Начну с вопроса «Как?». Так получилось, что академического исторического образования я не имею, и, грубо говоря, являюсь неофитом-самоучкой. Интерес и любовь к отечественной истории появились у меня еще в младшие школьные годы, когда мне в руки попали замечательнейшие книги «Ветры Куликова поля» и «В грозную пору», ну и конечно «Книга будущих командиров» и «книга будущих адмиралов». Интересный и увлекательный текст, красивые картинки - в общем, где-то в конце 1980х я хронически заболел Историей. Потом «ловил» каждый новый выпуск журналов «Орел» и «Цейхгауз», скупал ксероксы мэнов на Клубе стендового моделизма, и прочесывал все доступные библиотеки в поисках книг по истории. Отдельная история – ксерокопирование Висковатова в Ленинке. В те годы там существовало ограничение на количество ксерокопируемых за раз листов (кажется не больше 10-20) и полное копирование 1-6 частей – это был увлекательный квест J

Русская армия под общим командованием князя А.Н. Трубецкого состояла из 3 отдельных воеводских полков (корпусов):

- Большой полк А.Н. Трубецкого, вкл. воеводский полк его товарища окольничего А.В. Бутурлина, ок. 12,5 тыс. чел. 

- Рязанский полк князя Ф.Ф. Куракина, вкл. воеводские полки его товарищей окольничих князей С.Р. Пожарского и С.П. Львова, ок. 4 тыс. чел. 

- Белгородский полк Г.Г. Ромодановского, ок. 7,3 тыс. чел. 

Всего по состоянию на 5-6 июня 1659 объединенная русская армия под Конотопом насчитывала около 23,8 тыс. чел. при 73 орудиях и 3 мортирах. Также при русской армии находились казаки И. Беспалова (ок. 7 тыс. чел.)

French infantry at the start of Louis XIV's reign (15 May 1643)

On 15 May of 1643 French infantry composed of 166 infantry regiments: 141 of French & 25 of foreigners. Plus 200 independent garrison companies. They totaled on paper 218,860 men.
